Sunday 15th Sept

Steve and Dave toured the basin in KLM reporting a 3000' cloud base out east. Just Roland and John turned up to go soaring. It was obviously unstable but the cloud base remained low, except perhaps out west towards Cromwell. VH and KG launched at 1pm but it took nearly 2 hours before they got around the corner and onto the Dunstan tops via the west.

Spring soaring on the Dunstan Range

There was a dusting of new snow which combined with fluffy low clouds made the tops a spectacular place to fly. Roland reckoned it was his prettiest flight since gliding from Alex. Max height was 6500', which is really just above the tops. Lift was unreliable so we didn't venture far. Immediately east of the ridge line the base dropped to 4500. Many thanks to Russell for towing and Garry for running wings.
